Fragile

'Fragile' salt and pepper shaker set designed by mey kahn + boaz kahn.

When was the last time you emphatically broke something? The ceramic salt & pepper shaker offers you the opportunity to do it! The product comes in one piece and by breaking it, you make it useful. Breaking is an experience of impulsive outburst but this time is an act that builds rather than destroys. In a world of products whose shape is completely dictated by the designer, we enable the user to complete the design himself. The event of the breaking leaves its mark on the shaker and gives it its final, unique, one of a kind appearance.

Design Excellence - Wilkhahn Chassis

I think what makes this product so different is that because it's made with automotive progress, which has never been done before. It 's so light weight due to the minimal use of material. This design is really smart, it can be seen that all the design process had been thought really carefully and really into detail. They considered everything from the manufacturing process to the principle and elements of the product itself.

• Visit a museum

I visited Powerhouse Museum at 30th April. It has a diverse collection exploring all sorts of technology from arts, transport, furniture, space, and engines. When I went there, there were some products from The Australian International Design Awards being displayed and there was, I spotted a heart transportation system designed by our very own tutor, Gonz (congrats!!). Aside from them, the museum has exquisite collection showing the history and development of products ranging from vehicles to music instruments.

• Visit an exhibition

When I went to Powerhouse Museum there was an exhibition held inside named designTECH. The exhibition showed many types of design ranging from product to fashion design. It was so amazing knowing the fact that all design works displayed on that exhibition are made by high school students. Each works has its papers explaining what the stories behind them, which is really great and important as it helped me to understand design process in each works and how they were made.

• Read and comment on a design blog

The blog I read and comment upon is Kontrastblog. I posted a comment on an post about lights designed by Alice Rosignoli, which is consisted of two vinyl sticker lamps. I thought the design is smart considering the problem of small living space. The contrast created from different size and height is also nice.

I also commented on another post on the same blog, starring the Window phone. This mobile phone is still a concept, which is able to project current weather to its appearance. With the continuous development of technology, I believe this concept will make its way to reality in the future.

• Read and comment another students IDES 1122 blog

I read and posted some comments on several blogs but the one that really caught my eye is the post about paper engineering in Olivia Qiuyuan Lin’s blog. The whole pictures attached on the link are simply amazing and exquisite. It would be such a great source of inspiration for our 2d & 3d designer pattern project.

• Read three design magazine/journal

The first magazine I read is De Zeen, where I found 2 interesting article about Pinha lamp, and Tweety table lamp. I also read I.D. magazine starring Stretch Bag and Desk dots. Another magazine I read is Core77 where I read articles about Heinz’s new ketchup packet design, Dungeons&Dragons-type dice, and RUBBiSH sink. The one that get my interest the most is Pinha, which is a cork light fitting with the tiered system that allows users to pin their own paper shades and design their own lights.

• Do the UNSW Library induction – ELISE

Completed on 11th March.

• Visit another Library

I went to COFA Library and borrowed 3 books; The House of Fiction, Mod to Memphis, and Design Secrets: Furniture.

• Listen to ABC Radio ‘By Design’ Pod cast

I listened to one of the pod casts titled ‘Museum of Design Failure’. It is interesting, as it talked about design failures in different point of view. It also talked about how design failures can lead designers to even greater success.

• Watch a TED talk

The one that I watched is ‘Mick Ebeling : The invention that unlocked a locked-in artist”. The video tells a story about a graffiti artist who is incapable to make any artworks again because he is paralysed from head to toe. Ebeling and company then designed a device that able him to draw with his eyes. It’s good to know how design can bring positive changes in people’s lives and how design makes the world a better place.
